Via AP: WASHINGTON (AP) - Under fire from Republicans and some fellow Democrats, Sen. Dick Durbin apologized Tuesday for comparing American interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp to Nazis and other historically infamous figures.
"Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line," the Illinois Democrat said. "To them I extend my heartfelt apologies."
His voice quaking and tears welling in his eyes, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate also apologized to any soldiers who felt insulted by his remarks.
"They're the best. I never, ever intended any disrespect for them," he said.
"Some may have believed.."??? "To them?" How about the soldiers, marines, and sailors and all those of the Armed Servcies you insulted senator. How about the American people Senator. Why are you placing the blame (again) on their "sensitivities". Senator Durbin you can't interpret these words in any other way but as slander not only against our brave military men and women in the armed services, but to Americans everywhere.
Your words Senator!
"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags or some mad regime - Pol Pot or others - that had no concern for human beings," June 14, 2005
While many of my fellow blogger on the right have been hammering away for the apology, yours truly thinks the time for an apology is past. It's time for Senator Durbin to be censured, and if he had any integrity left he would simply resign. It's time to stop slamming the troops just to make your political hay. An example must be set, it might as well start with him.
The Captain has words on this as well.
