"OAKLAND, Calif. - Two members of a Muslim sect were charged Thursday with hate crimes and vandalism stemming from attacks on two liquor stores last week
Yusuf Bey IV, 19, and Donald Eugene Cunningham, 73, will return to Alameda Superior Court on Monday to enter pleas on charges that also include false imprisonment, prosecutors said.
Bey IV is the son of Yusef Bey, founder of Your Black Muslim Bakery in Oakland. He faces six felony counts and was being held on a $110,000 bond.
Cunningham, a longtime associate and friend of the Bey family, faces eight charges. He was being held on a $170,000 bond.
The charges stem from two attacks in West Oakland on Nov. 23. The New York Market and San Pablo Liquor Store were vandalized by a group of about 11 black men dressed in business suits and bow ties.
The vandals asked why a Muslim-owned store would sell liquor when drinking is forbidden by Islamic teachings. They demanded that the stores stop selling alcohol to black people.
The New York Market was gutted by arson on Monday, and the clerk was kidnapped and stuffed in a car trunk. He was later found unharmed."
