Some are suspecting that he simply snapped at the thought of going to Afghanistan, however this wouldn't be the case as he entered the soldier center where troops were being medically cleared for deployment.
We simply don't know the motive at this time, but I would wager it's a reprisal after the shooting of Luqman A. Abdullah. The feds issued a warning that such reprisals may take place this week and had good intel that threats were valid. Again, we simply don't know.

"Major Nadal Malik Hasan, a 39-year-old Muslim convert, was born and educated in Virginia. He is a psychiatrist who worked at Walter Reed for six years (and got a poor performance evaluation there). Hasan was transferred to Ft. Hood and worked at the psych ward there. He complained about deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Fox has interviewed someone who worked with him at Ft. Hood (Terry Lee) who says he was a harsh critic of U.S. foreign policy who said Muslims had a right to stand up and fight against the aggressor in Iraq and Afghanistan — i.e., us."
Apparently what we have here is an antiwar nut gone amuck.
Waiting for the press to pick up the "Radical Left-Wing Nutcase goes Crazy"....(crickets...)
Note that Obama spoke on the tragedy, but the real question for him is "Why the wait to send more troops". The untold story there is that with the lack of appropriate troop levels in Afghanistan rotations are more frequent thus more stress for the troops.
