"As the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller is optimistic about the prospect of Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden becoming the next CIA director.
“I happen to think he’s pretty much of a straight shooter. His instincts are good,” Rockefeller told The Associated Press in a telephone interview on Thursday. “I tend to have a pretty good view of him.”
Rockefeller said the four-star general answered several of his questions during the open session of Hayden’s confirmation hearing before the committee Thursday. A supporter of Hayden’s performance as NSA chief, Rockefeller believes he will help the CIA as it coordinates spy operations with the Pentagon.
“When the Department of Defense tried to push around the NSA, he would not allow that. He’s stood up to [Defense Secretary Donald] Rumsfeld,” Rockefeller said.
“It doesn’t bother me at all that he’s a military guy,” Rockefeller said. “He’s spent his whole life in the military doing intelligence, and the most sophisticated kind of intelligence.”

Rocky is simple doing the Rat Fandango here. He knows that nothing is going to derail the nomination and wants to "smooth" Hayden over.
